Debra is an author of stories, plays, but mostly, children's poetry.
Debra visits schools all over the UK, inspiring children to play with words, setting their imaginations on fire and creating their own poetry full of imagery.
Debra’s sessions are fun and interactive and will light that poetry spark in all children!
About Debra
Debra is a highly experienced poet and performer in schools. Her poetry has appeared in many anthologies with major publishers, is featured on the LAMDA syllabus and is performed at Speech Festivals worldwide. She has experience with all pupils, including Gifted and Talented pupils, reluctant writers, EAL, as well as children who lack focus and confidence.
Debra’s AIM High Writing Days
Debra loves working in schools and her aim is to inspire a love of poetry and the spoken word. Debra’s approach is flexible and humorous and aimed at helping pupils feel comfortable and relaxed.
She gradually builds confidence by explaining we all have our own The Poetry Toolkit and explains how to use it
Debra will talk about the use of similes, metaphors, adjectives to create imagery in our writing.
After hearing model poems, children will begin writing. Later, Debra explains how editing works.
She regularly liaises with accompanying Teachers and Learning Support Assistants during each session to ensure every child feels included, engaged and happy.
At the end of the day, volunteers may read their finished work aloud. Every child receives a personal Certificate of Achievement and Tip Sheet to take home.
