Mary’s AIM High Writing Days
Mary’s AIM High days can cover fiction or non fiction.
Mary’s journalism workshop covers breaking news stories, multiple information sources and keeping a close eye on deadlines. In this workshop, the students will learn what news is and how to write about events. They’ll follow a story from rumour to (perhaps unreliable) eyewitness accounts to indisputable facts and be challenged to change the narrative as the story unfolds.
In non-fiction, informational writing workshops, the students will create book maps, learn how to make facts earn their keep and choose words and images appropriate for the audience. Participants will cover the key skills of hooking a reader, produce engaging writing, learn how to edit and proofread effectively, make editorial decisions and work collaboratively - just like the real publishing process.
Mary’s writing workshops for fiction writing include life writing, improving writing confidence, script writing and short story writing. From creative warm up activities to the main event, the students will be taken through how writers construct characters, plot creation and genre. Most importantly, the participants will be encouraged to find and develop their own, unique writing voice.
