Andy’s AIM High Writing Days
Andy loves leading AIM High days. Andy says ‘There are always too many things that I’d like to do given the time we have, and so my days begin with a quick, creative consultation with the host school about which options they’d like to choose’.
‘Generally the students from different schools will feel a little nervous at first, and we begin with a couple poems from me and then some simple warm ups and games designed to get everyone moving, talking, responding, and forgetting that they’re worried’.
‘Once we’re warmed up, we practice various creative writing skills in short, simple exercises, sharing frequently. The skills practiced may include’:
Writing from you (rather than what you think you’re supposed to write).
Using detail.
Using the senses.
Writing with sound.
Creating similes and metaphors.
Generating ideas (through freewriting, free-association, speaking games).
Show don’t tell.
How to rhyme with anything.
