Ian Botwright - Robotics
Ian is a former primary school teacher, where he was a member of the school's Senior Leadership Team and is a keen robot warrior!
Ian’s AIM High Kbot and Robotics Days
Year 3 & 4 Kbot Day
This workshop is based around the Knex construction system and Ian builds on an American programme called Kbots (started in the U.S.A. in the late 1990’s).
In small groups of two or three, pupils will assemble and build a basic 'Kbot'.
Students then get the chance to redesign and modify the 'Kbot' for a series of competitions: Bulldog, Bowling Alley, Bridge of Doom, and Kbot Sumo - designed to encourage their ingenuity and increase their knowledge of Design Technology and applicable scientific concepts.
During these competitions the children will learn about the uses and problems with friction. How they can use gearing to increase speed or torque, how to apply leverage or weight distribution to get the best results, and key knowledge of the fundamentals of robot design.
Most importantly, students will also explore the social aspects to successful design work; learning to co-operate and contribute to a group in order to ensure team success.
Year 5 & 6 Robotics Day
This workshop is based around the Knex construction system and Ian builds on an American programme called Kbots (started in the U.S.A. in the late 1990’s).
In small groups of two or three, pupils will assemble and build remote control fighting robots from scratch using a mix of Knex and Ian’s own customised electronics (as used in Ian’s own Beetleweight robots) and parts. They will then modify their robots to compete in a range of challenges such as Skittles, Football (fouling allowed!), and of course battling it out to the finish sumo style. Two robots per team will ensure that cooperation is the order of the day if they want to become champions. These challenges are all designed to encourage their ingenuity and increase their knowledge of Design Technology and applicable scientific concepts.
One of Ian’s robots which was selected for the BBC TV series Robot Wars and a former UK middleweight champion will make an appearance to demonstrate the similarities in design.
This day covers a host of science and engineering concepts including: electrical circuits, batteries, friction, levers, ratio, materials, radio, uses of microprocessors and of course safety!
Most importantly students will also explore the social aspects to successful design work; learning to co-operate and contribute to a group in order to ensure team success.
