James Carter - Writing
JAMES CARTER is an award-winning children’s poet, non-fiction writer and musician.
About James
An ambassador for National Poetry Day, he travels all over the UK and abroad with his melodica (that’s Steve) to give lively poetry/music performances/workshops/INSET days which are ultimately ALL ABOUT THE WRITING. A former lecturer in Creative Writing/Children’s Literature at Reading Uni, in the last 20 years James has visited over 1500 Primary/Prep schools. What’s more he’s performed at various prestigious festivals including Cheltenham, Bath, Hay and Edinburgh. His latest verse non-fiction series for younger readers (Little Tiger Press) is translated into 10 international languages. In one Primary school in Cheltenham, an OFSTED inspector gave him an ‘Outstanding!’
James’s AIM High Writing Day
James’s AIM High Writing days are all about taking children on a thrilling journey. James will encourage children to write something they have never written before - stepping out of their usual writing patterns/comfort zones so that ultimately, they will create something fresh and exciting – with writing that they are surprised by and really proud of.
In practice, the day begins with some writing games, experiments with free verse forms, writing and improvising to instrumental music. The group will move on to write lyrical and expressive verse, really stretching themselves and delving deep into their vocabularies and creativities.
To finish, if time allows – some fun and funky story rhymes. James wants children to come away feeling/saying ‘Wow! Look what I’ve written!’
It’s all about the writing – and though we are essentially writing poetry, EVERYTHING done on the day will feed directly into/inform/sharpen children’s prose writing skills.
