Matt’s AIM High Writing Days
Working with Years 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and 7 upwards, Matt specialises in two fields of creative writing: fiction and journalism.
His journalism workshop - Wild Story Seekers - is a firm favourite, and serves as an introduction to vital reporting skills. Adopting the style of a newsroom, Matt will reveal several breaking environmental stories and encourage participants to assess the narrative components. They’ll go on to conduct face-to-face interviews with the central players before writing and ultimately presenting their final news item on deadline – and as a live television bulletin. It’s a fun, inclusive day designed to enthuse everyone and equip them with the basics of non-fiction storytelling.
In The Writers Who Stare At Windows, Matt’s fiction workshop focuses on the skills required to turn an idea into a story. This is often an under-explored stage of the creative writing process, and Matt will encourage an age-appropriate, peer-led discussion about common obstacles and opportunities in beginning and then sustaining a story. He’ll then pitch a basic idea as inspiration, and encourage pupils to write a story feeling confident in the creative decisions they must make before putting pen to paper. Essentially, it's about planning and harnessing the excitement and enthusiasm so many young writers possess in order to keep a story under control and on track from start to finish.
Ultimately, these are workshops designed to build confidence and self-belief in young writers of all abilities. With a passion for bringing out the best in everyone on the day - from the shy to the super-confident - Matt goes to great lengths to ensure everyone leaves fired up in the knowledge that writing can help them make the most of life.
